May 7, 2013 - Council Meeting

The next meeting of the Charles County Literacy Council will be on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, 7:00 p.m. at the United Way Building, La Plata. Come meet the newly elected Executive Board for 2013-2015. We begin every meeting with a tutor-student discussion. This is a great opportunity to talk face-to-face with other tutors about milestones, progress or issues you want to bring to the table.

HELP AN ADULT – BECOME A VOLUNTEER TUTOR

If you can read, you can teach someone else to read and change a life forever.

Our Spring 2013 Workshop is taking registrations now. Space is limited, reservations are required. There is a $30.00 non-refundable registration fee, payable by check, cash or money order. Materials and light dinner fare will be provided. All nine hours of training must be attended to become a tutor.  At the end of training, you will be matched with an adult learner and will be a life-changing volunteer tutor.

March 5, 2013 - Council Meeting

LITERACY COUNCIL HIRES NEW PROGRAM COORDINATOR

The Board of Directors of the Charles County Literacy Council announced today that the Council has hired Marbury resident Dana Sue Lateulere as Program Coordinator.

 
Ms. Lateulere, a self-employed environmental biologist, also brings experience with volunteer work as President, Henry E. Lackey Athletic Boosters, President, General Smallwood Middle School PTO, and Girl Scouts. Additionally, her professional experience as a tutor enhances her ability to coordinate the myriad programs of the Literacy Council.

The Charles County Literacy Council provides free, one-on-one tutoring to adults in Charles County in reading, writing, basic mathematics and English spoken with other languages (ESOL).

December 2012 - News

Come join us for the Charles County Literacy Council's winter fundraiser at the St. Charles Towne Center (Food Court area) on Friday, December 14 and 21st (9:00a.m.-9:30p.m.) and Saturday, December 15 and 22 (9:00a.m.-9:30p.m.); volunteers will be on hand to wrap shoppers' gifts for donations; if you would like to volunteer as a greeter or a wrapper, contact Jack Faherty at jfaherty@verizon.net or the CCLC at 301-934-6488. We need donations of holiday and other wrapping paper, gift boxes of all sizes, tissue paper, bows and name tags. Donations will be used to provide additional books and materials for our volunteer tutors and adult learners.
